We're Back
Hello. Again? I used to write monthly-ish posts here, then just over three years ago, you know…everything happened. I had to start teaching online and asynchronously. (And what’s more figure out how to teach undergraduate research methods, including how to use R, online and asynchronously.) I had a kid. I had to put a tenure packet together. Et cetera.
I’m coming back to this Substack now for a few reasons. Most immediately is that there really aren’t any other good places anymore to drop a note, or comment on the news, or promote a thing I wrote, or promote a thing my friends wrote. I haven’t been on Twitter in months. I tried Mastodon but few others in my academic community did. I suspect Bluesky is mostly users talking about how bad Twitter is, the way Mastodon was (is?). I’m on Instagram but it’s not great for purely text-based communication. “No thank you” to Threads in my best Michael-McKean-in-Clue voice.
I originally started a Substack years ago because two of my favorite basketball writers had and it seemed like a thing to do. This time around I’ll still write the occasional longer post about something going on in U.S. public policy, or my teaching, to work out research ideas, or to post stuff that didn’t fit into an article or book chapter. But I’m also planning to take more advantage of the new(-ish) Notes feature to link to other stuff I like, or post screenshots of good/interesting writing, or just generally post shorter things. So subscribe if you haven’t already (It’s free and always will be), follow me on the app, and spread the word. More to come later this week.
I'll be interested to see if you get traction from Notes--I like using it but haven't gotten much traction!
